Palestinian Tatreez Patterns and Their Meanings: A Motif Guide
Share
Last Updated: September 24, 2026
Every Tatreez motif carries meaning. For generations, Palestinian women stitched the cypress, the star, birds, and flowers onto their dresses as a language of home, family, and hope. This guide walks through the most common Tatreez patterns, what they're associated with, and where they traditionally appear.

Tatreez Motifs and What They Mean
The Cypress Tree
Tall, evergreen, and deeply rooted, the cypress is one of the best-known Tatreez motifs. It's most often associated with steadfastness, resilience, and rootedness in the land. Cypress trees are often stitched in rows along the side panels or hem of a thobe.

The Eight-Pointed Star
Stars, especially the eight-pointed star, are among the most widespread Tatreez motifs. They're associated with light, hope, and beauty, and are often used as bold centerpieces on the chest panel (qabbeh) of a thobe. The eight-pointed star is sometimes called the Star of Bethlehem.
Moon and Disc Medallions
Round and star-shaped medallions are classic thobe centerpieces. The name "Wardeh al-Qamar" means "the moon's flower," a poetic name reflecting the beauty these designs were meant to capture.

Trees and Branches
Trees and branching designs, often called the tree of life, are associated with growth, family, and continuity across generations, and with the olive trees that are central to Palestinian life.
Flowers
Roses, carnations, and other floral designs are associated with life, beauty, renewal, and celebration, and were especially common on wedding and festive dresses.

Birds
Birds appear in many regional styles and are associated with hope, freedom, and good news. Pairs of birds are sometimes linked with love and marriage.
Diamonds, Squares, and Triangles
Geometric shapes form many Tatreez borders and fillings. They're commonly associated with home, protection, and stability, and triangles are sometimes stitched as amulet shapes for protection.
Borders and Bands
Long bands of repeating motifs frame the sleeves, hem, and side panels of a thobe. They tie the whole garment together and often show a region's signature style.
Where Motifs Appear on a Traditional Thobe
- Chest panel (qabbeh): the most densely embroidered area, often home to the most important motifs like stars and medallions.
- Sleeves: decorated with bands or panels of embroidery.
- Side and back panels: often feature tall vertical motifs such as rows of cypress trees.
- Hem: finished with borders that frame the dress.
What Tatreez Colors Mean
Red is the signature Tatreez color and is associated with life, love, and celebration, with shades that varied by region. Many villages also used greens, oranges, purples, and golds, and the color palette of a dress could help identify where its maker came from.
Wearing Tatreez Motifs Today
At TURATH FASHION, a Palestinian-owned brand founded in 2021 in British Columbia, our two Palestinian founders bring these motifs into modern clothing, handcrafting each piece at home. The designs are stitched mostly on a small embroidery machine, with hand-stitching added where needed. For fully hand-stitched pieces, we offer special orders with Tatreez panels made by Palestinian women artisans in refugee camps. Email Turath.mona@gmail.com or message @turath.mona on Instagram.
